Key Technologies does not  believe in the concepts of "low-tech" and "high-tech" augmentative communication devices.  Lower cost communication devices designed to produce a smaller number of messages are often well-designed, highly engineered, and of high quality.  They are simply designed for the user with needs at that level.  Likewise higher cost devices often share similar technologies with their less expensive counterparts, but are of no higher quality and do not necessarily provide certain users with any advantages.  Always select an augmentative communication device according to the individual user's strengths and foreseeable needs.  Never according to cost (higher or lower) or gimmicks.

Instead, Key Technologies prefers to classify augmentative communication devices from a developmental hierarchy, or message capability/selection technique, viewpoint.  We find this to be clinically and practically much more useful.  Below is a developmental arrangement of the augmentative communication devices we provide.  We hope this way of examining communication devices is useful for you as well.
